Our Mission

Our Jazz Society is committed to promoting the art of jazz music in Southern Minnesota by providing a welcoming and inclusive community for jazz musicians, enthusiasts, and supporters.

Our mission is to preserve the rich history of jazz music while also cultivating a vibrant and dynamic jazz scene that reflects the diverse cultural and artistic traditions of Southern Minnesota.

We strive to achieve our mission by:

  • Creating opportunities for jazz musicians to perform and collaborate with one another, as well as with musicians from other genres and cultural backgrounds.

  • Hosting concerts, festivals, and other events that showcase the best local, national, and international jazz talent.

  • Providing educational programs and resources that help aspiring musicians develop their skills and deepen their knowledge of jazz history and theory.

  • Supporting initiatives that promote jazz music as an important cultural and artistic form, and advocating for increased access to jazz education and performance opportunities in our community.

  • Celebrating the contributions of African American jazz musicians to the development of the genre and recognizing the ongoing importance of jazz as a vehicle for social and political expression.

Through these efforts, our Jazz Society seeks to enrich the cultural life of Southern Minnesota and foster a greater appreciation for the beauty, complexity, and enduring significance of jazz music.

What is a Jazz Society?

A jazz society is an organization or community that promotes and celebrates the art of jazz music. It can take various forms, ranging from a local club that hosts jazz performances to a regional or national organization that supports jazz musicians, educates the public about the history and culture of jazz, and advocates for jazz as an important genre of music.

At its core, a jazz society is made up of jazz enthusiasts who share a passion for the music and its cultural significance. These individuals may include musicians, educators, historians, and fans of all ages and backgrounds. They come together to enjoy live performances, share knowledge and resources, and support jazz artists and organizations.

Jazz societies often organize events such as concerts, festivals, workshops, and lectures that showcase the diversity and richness of jazz music. They may also offer educational programs for aspiring musicians or music lovers, such as masterclasses, mentorship opportunities, and scholarships.

In addition to promoting jazz music, many jazz societies also work to preserve the history and cultural heritage of jazz. This can involve collecting and archiving recordings, photographs, and other artifacts related to jazz history, as well as advocating for the recognition and protection of important jazz landmarks and institutions.

Overall, a jazz society serves as a vital hub for the jazz community, connecting people who share a common love for this vibrant and constantly evolving genre of music.
